The Notebook

“So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s going to be really hard; we’re gonna have to work at this everyday, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, everyday. You and me… everyday.”

― Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook

I was going to post today about taking charge during a gig and Making It Work For You but as I was transcribing that stuff I saw an announcement from Moleskine that my favorite notebook would now be available in new colors. I was so excited I stopped what I was doing to share their status update about in on my personal Facebook page along with this picture.

Forest Green! True Red! Turd Brown! Why so excited Thomas? Well…the Moleskine Cahier notebook (lined if your curious) is my favorite notebook. I’ve been using it exclusively for years and have gone through more than 30 of them. Writing in and keeping notebooks have been instrumental in any success I’ve had as a comedy juggler and I’m excited to see some new colors.

I can’t tell you the best way to train juggling tricks. I can’t tell you the best way to craft a show or write a joke. I can tell you that the best way to improve at all of those things is to write. Everyday. Keep a notebook. Takes notes after every show. Track your progress with tricks. Write jokes everyday.

I can’t tell you the best way to do that. For me it’s writing in notebook with a crappy hotel pen. For you, it might be on an iPhone or a laptop. Try all of the ways and find what works best for you. Make it into a habit. Write everyday for 30 days and you’ll have enough momentum to continue as long as you want. Find a time of day that works for you and try to write at the same time everyday. Jerry Seinfeld would put a big red “X” on the calendar everyday he wrote and he hated to see a missing day so he worked hard for that “X” everyday.

If you are serious about getting better at comedy juggling take the 30 Day Notebook Challenge.

“So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s going to be really hard; we’re gonna have to work at this everyday, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, everyday. You and me… everyday.”

So get a notebook and start writing. Take show notes. Track your progress. Everyday for 30 Days. In the spirit of community and as a show of support, I will post a picture on the Balls & Jokes Facebook page of my notebook every day for the next 30 days. You can laugh at my spelling mistakes, bad jokes, and ramblings but you’ll see that I do it every day and every once and a while there is something good. Here is a picture of my notebook from 20.5.17. I was working on a tag for this joke:

“They sell gold by the inch here. Which is cool but if you decide to buy gold by the inch make sure to buy from a woman, because a man will charge you for nine inches, but only give you three.”
